You might be asking yourself, why does GCG align with so many athletes? Fun Fact: there are 69 college teams using cats as their team or mascot name, that’s one reason. The second and probably more useful answer is that it allows for mass awareness and adoption.

Sports are the backbone of America, the lifeblood if you will. People care more about sports than they do their family. During the pandemic, there was a major crisis for many Americans as sports were no longer part of their lives. But now, the pandemic is over and sports are back so it’s time to align with something all Americans enjoy. NFTs are not too dissimilar to sports, they create rivalries, who is best, who is a “Blue chip” or dynasty equivalent and they help to fuel shit posts on Twitter and there’s a bunch of projects who just are NGMI like the Knicks or Jets. Apart from having any sort of athletic ability, NFTs are exactly like sports or the arm chair quarterback equivalent at least.

The reason in my opinion that GCG has aligned with sports is because it allows a more open dialogue, it allows us to create a deeper level of fandom among our members and it gives people something to relate to IRL. ESPN is how many of us discovered sports and having the GCG brand on ESPN allows us to integrate into culture in the most natural and organic way.

At the end of the day, Web3 is about breaking down barriers and the fact that you can be on the same spaces as The Dirty Bird or Renee Montgomery or see LaMelo wearing GCG on his shoes in a game is exactly the reason web3 should exist. GCG has focused on basketball and I think that’s the right thing to do, we want to be a lifestyle/culture brand and the NBA is culture, they’re progressive, their athletes set the tone for what is cool in fashion, music, style, music and more. I mean even rappers wanna be ballers right. So, what better way to create a culture brand than to align with people that create and drive culture.

It’s a strategy that is working and will continue to work as we dive deeper into the new season. What’s most exciting to me is the utility crossover, what if you could go to a game and buy tickets with $gang or purchase merchandise a beer and a glizzy with $gang? I know @steezy would be all over it. I am incredibly excited to see who the face of gutter athletes become and maybe I already know but I am not going to mention it or maybe I will weave it into my next Gutter City Post article, all I will say is that you should be bloody excited about what GCG is going to do in sports.
