The origins of KingpinDAO (KPD) are not glamourous by any means. Sure, it’s fun to think of a bunch of fat cats in pinstripe suits plotting the future of the gutter from a smoky board room.

The reality is, KPD originally was formed by Gutter Cat Gang Kingpins (owning 5+ cats), to provide liquidity to the Gutter Cat and Species LPs. It became pretty apparent that we could better spend our time, energy, and resources to further GCG as a brand and the assets within it beyond liquidity. After careful consideration, we lit some cigars, got some Herman Miller’s for the boardroom, and got to work. DAOs are meant to be decentralized and autonomous, but really are neither.

Instead, we are a democratic start-up with 60+ highly influential gutter members, a packed boardroom. It took a lot of effort to set up structure, formally incorporate, seek legal consult, and make sure we were constructed in a way that insured our future success. This was all a big departure from what the GCG Boardroom looked like previously.

Time and energy spent trying to influence the team to meet perception of how the business should be run. It’s not a uniquely gutter thing. Every project has and is going through this right now, sitting on twitter spaces and contemplating where it went wrong and how the team can fix it in a bear. The departure for us was realizing that energy spent asking for more was better spent just doing it.

Early in the process we set out in exploration of what the gutter needed, testing our influence, and seeking to provide community engagement for GCG members, support of community led projects, and discovering some crazy avenues that ultimately could bring notoriety to GCG and the DAO itself. We didn’t always succeed but continued to seek out our niche and over the last several months we’ve found it. Today, the Gutter Cat Gang community has hit its stride.

The community is creating on a level equivalent or greater to anyone in the web3 space. The GCG founders have been collaborative, and we take pride in knowing that KPD has had some small role in it. This is just the beginning. In the coming months, KPD will roll out our most ambitious projects yet. We can’t wait to show you.
